Abstract

To evaluate the effect of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) on
the state of retinopathy. Materials and methods: 97 patients with diabetes were included in the survey. A number
of biochemical lipid metabolism parameters, glycated hemoglobin, and visual acuity data were evaluated. Results:
Normal blood glucose and lipid metabolism parameters allow to maintain vision even in case of the development
of diabetic retinopathy before laser coagulation or surgical manipulation. In the case of an uncompensated course
of the disease, these interventions may be ineffective. Conclusions: The compensated course of the disease plays an
important role in the prevention of ophthalmologic complications of diabetes.
